VERY LITTLE IMPACT FROM HENRI

SUNSET. This was taken Friday evening in Summerfield.                                                     Photo By: Charles E. Roop

SUMMERFIELD, FL (09/06/2003) - Thursday night, meteorologists, weather enthusiasts and Charles "Da Weatha Man" Roop were thinking that (then) Tropical Depression 12 was going to further deluge the state. Friday night, that didn't look like the case.

It turns out that upper level winds with a upper level low pressure system in the western Gulf of Mexico further weakened Tropical Storm Henri. It sent most of the convection further east of the center of circulation. This helped ease the fear of even more rain and flooding. Instead, here in Summerfield, a nice sunset took place (look above).

"The impact was a lot less than expected," said Roop. "We were lucky. The flooding victims were lucky."

AMS MEMBER

SUMMERFIELD, FL (12/01/2002) - Da Weatha Man, Charles Roop, has been issued a letter stating acceptance into the American Meteorological Society. Roop submitted an application in early October and a check enclosed to cover Student Member application fees.

"Your application is in good order and has been recommended to the Council for approval," said the letter Roop got in the mail Nov. 30.

His name should be on the new members list in the forthcoming issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Roop is honored to receive this letter and hopes to participate in member activities and area chapters. He plans on going to a AMS Tampa Bay chapter meeting at the NWS office in Tampa Bay Dec. 5.

09/21/2002 - Roop is now an advanced SKYWARN storm spotter. In mid-July, Roop took the advanced SKYWARN class in Gainesville where Warning Coordinator Meteorologist Fred Johnson taught the class. It lasted about 90 minutes. Roop passed the test and received his certificate from the NWS.

NOW A LICENSED HAM

05/24/2002 - Roop took the technician class test for the amateur radio service on Monday, May 13 after spending about three months of going to classes. He passed the exam and was earned an certificate. Monday, May 20, his license was granted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). His call sign is KG4TLG. Roop also recently ordered his first amateur radio transceiver. His mother paid for it as a graduation present since he is graduating from high school this Saturday. The Icom IC-T7H 2 band (2m/440MHz) handheld transceiver will be at his house sometime next week.

"A special thanks to the Silver Springs Radio Club for making this possible."

SPOTTER ID RECEIVED

05/01/2002 - Roop's SKYWARN spotter ID came in the mail yesterday. MAR-104 is his ID.

SUN DOG

04/16/2002 - This picture of a sun dog was taken on the Florida Turnpike on the way home from the AMS Weather Fest in Orlando Jan. 13. Sun dogs, or a parhella, is caused by ice crystals that reflect the sun and make what appears to me a "mock sun." Most of the time there can be two mock suns, but this day there was only one seen.
